New Delhi: Sunday, November 2, was a historic day for Indian women’s cricket. And the following Wednesday became equally unforgettable for the same World Champion team, when the players met Prime Minister Narendra Modi at his residence in the national capital, Delhi. During this light-hearted interaction, the exchange between Player of the Tournament and India’s premier all-rounder Deepti Sharma and the Prime Minister stood out.
Back in 2017, under the leadership of Mithali Raj, India narrowly lost the World Cup final against England. That runner-up squad had stars like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Deepti Sharma. The defeat was heartbreaking, but PM Modi had then personally encouraged the players, instilling in them a renewed sense of confidence and determination.

This time, the World Cup trophy came home — as Team India created a new chapter of glory. While speaking with the Prime Minister on Wednesday, Deepti Sharma told him, “I’ve been waiting to meet you again since 2017. Back then, you motivated us to work hard to fulfil our dream. Your advice helped me recover from the pain of that loss. That motivation stayed with us — and we brought the trophy home. I often listen to your speeches. You are very calm by nature, and even when someone criticizes you, you handle it with remarkable composure.”
Deepti’s Instagram bio reads ‘Jai Shri Ram’, and she also sports a Hanuman tattoo on her arm. When PM Modi smilingly asked her, “You travel the world playing cricket — how does Lord Hanuman help you along the way?” Deepti laughed and replied, “I have immense faith in Bajrang Bali. Whenever I’m in difficulty, I remember Him. The moment I chant His name, I feel that, by His grace, I’ll overcome any challenge.” The Prime Minister then addressed all the players, saying, “Faith plays a vital role in our lives. The best part is that when we surrender everything to God, we can be at peace — knowing that He will set everything right.”
