In a striking act of defiance, Asaduddin Owaisi, the leader of AIMIM, tore apart a copy of the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, during a heated Lok Sabha debate on Wednesday night, signaling his fierce opposition to the proposed legislation. The Hyderabad MP’s symbolic gesture unfolded as he took the floor to address the controversial bill.
Drawing a historical parallel, Owaisi referenced Mahatma Gandhi’s resistance to discriminatory laws during his time in South Africa. “History shows what Gandhi said about the unjust laws of white South Africa,” Owaisi remarked. “He declared, ‘My conscience doesn’t accept this,’ and ripped them up.” Echoing that sentiment, Owaisi continued, “In the same spirit, I am tearing up this bill. It’s unconstitutional. The BJP is using temples and mosques to sow division in this country. I strongly denounce this and urge you to support the 10 amendments I’ve proposed.”
