Ahmedabad : A Thai-flagged cargo ship sailing towards Gujarat was struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday. The ship, identified as the Mayuree Naree, was targeted approximately 11 nautical miles off the northern coast of Oman, according to maritime security sources and ship tracking data.
The Royal Thai Navy and the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations both reported that a cargo vessel had been hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on March 11. Images and maritime records confirmed the vessel’s identity as the Thai-flagged bulk carrier Mayuree Naree. Verification was carried out through its International Maritime Organisation number as well as the ship’s hull and superstructure, which matched archived images of the vessel.
The vessel caught fire. The blaze was later brought under control. According to maritime sources, the Omani navy launched a rescue operation in the area and evacuated 20 of the 23 crew members from the vessel. Authorities have not yet disclosed details about their condition or the extent of the damage sustained by the ship. Data from maritime tracking systems confirmed that the incident occurred off the northern coast of Oman within the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical shipping routes.
While the incident has been widely linked in maritime security discussions to tensions involving Tehran, no group or country has claimed responsibility so far. Both the Royal Thai Navy and maritime security authorities have said the attack involved an unidentified projectile and that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the strike.
