SIR Is Prerogative Of ECI, Directive To Them Is Interference: SC; Next Hearing To Be Held On Thursday

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Tuesday said that conducting the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in poll-bound Bihar is the prerogative and exclusive domain of the Election Commission, and issuing any directive to them would amount to interference. The top court’s response came after the Election Commission was asked to inform the bench on when it would plan to conduct the SIR in five other states.

Congress leader and senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, representing the petitioners, who have challenged the SIR process, said that millions of people whose names were deleted from the electoral roll were not notified. None of the 3.66 lakh people whose names were deleted received any notice. No one was given any reason.

After the final voter list was released, we were able to do some analysis. We received the 2003 directive for SIR, and another directive from 2016 that explained how to remove fake voters. SIR has exacerbated problems instead of solving them, he said. There is a complete lack of transparency. He stated that copies of both the draft list and the final list have been provided to political parties.

On September 30, the Election Commission released the final electoral rolls in Bihar with nearly 7.42 crore names mentioned after the SIR. A total of 68 lakh names were deleted from the voters list, out of which 21 lakh names were added again to the list after the claims and objections period. The Supreme Court asked the petitioners to give a list of some people who are claimed that they were not informed about their names being removed from the electoral rolls and cannot file an appeal.
