SC Questions Shami’s Ex-Wife Hasin Jahan In Alimony Case, Issues Notice To Pacer

New Delhi : The Supreme Court of India has issued a notice to Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the West Bengal government on a petition filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking an increase in the monthly maintenance granted to her and their daughter. In her plea, she argued that the amount was insufficient given Shami’s financial status and lifestyle, and sought a higher monthly maintenance.

However, the bench issued notices to both Shami and the West Bengal government, directing them to file their responses within four weeks. The matter is expected to be heard again in December. Hasin Jahan’s counsel contended that Shami, as a prominent international cricketer, earns substantially and owns significant assets. “The husband earns a lot of money. Look at the affidavits, he has property worth hundreds of crores, cars, frequent foreign travel, and a luxurious lifestyle,” her lawyer submitted before the court.

Jahan further asserted that while she may not claim a personal right over Shami’s income, their daughter is entitled to a standard of living comparable to her father’s. “The daughter has the right to interact with the children of his peers, study in similar schools, and live with dignity,” the plea stated. The court’s notice marks the latest development in the long-standing legal dispute between Shami and Hasin Jahan, which began in 2018 following allegations of domestic abuse, dowry harassment, and financial disputes.
