SC Bar Association Expels Lawyer Rakesh Kishore Who Hurled Shoe At CJI

New Delhi : The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) has expelled Rakesh Kishore, the lawyer who tried to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, with immediate effect. The shocking incident took place on Monday and the 71-year-old senior advocate was immediately detained by the police and escorted out of the courtroom.

The Bar Association said, Such reprehensible, disorderly, and intemperate behaviour is utterly unbecoming of an officer of the court and constitutes a serious breach of professional ethics, decorum, and the dignity of the Supreme Court. The SCBA further said that Kishore’s attempted attack amounts to a direct assault on judicial independence, the sanctity of courtroom proceedings. Earlier this week, the Bar Council of India had also suspended his licence, calling the act “a blot on the legal fraternity.

The attempted attack came almost a month after the Chief Justice was widely criticised over his controversial “go and ask the deity itself” remarks while hearing a plea linked to the restoration of a damaged Vishnu idol in Madhya Pradesh. Kishore on Tuesday referred to the plea and said, “A PIL was filed in the court of CJI on September 16. The CJI mocked it and said – go and pray to the idol and tell it to restore its own head… When a matter related to our Sanatan Dharma comes up, the Supreme Court passes such orders.

While maintaining that he had no regret for his actions, Kishore added, “Don’t provide relief to the petitioner, but don’t mock him either. I was hurt. I was not inebriated. This was my reaction to his (Chief Justice) action. I am not fearful. CJI Gavai, however, remained composed and continued with the proceedings. He reportedly asked court staff and security personnel to “just ignore it” and let the 71-year-old lawyer off with a warning. Don’t get distracted by all this. These things do not affect me. Continue with the hearing, the Chief Justice said.
