Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) has issued an official statement following a tragic stampede that occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium during the team’s IPL trophy celebration on June 4. The incident claimed 11 lives and left many others injured, casting a shadow over what was supposed to be a historic moment for the franchise.
In a late-night statement, RCB expressed deep sorrow over the incident and acknowledged the public distress caused by overcrowding in various parts of Bengaluru during the team’s homecoming.
“We are deeply anguished by the unfortunate incidents that have come to light through media reports regarding public gatherings all over Bengaluru in anticipation of the team’s arrival this afternoon. The safety and well-being of everyone is of utmost importance to us,” the franchise stated.
The team added that it immediately revised its schedule upon learning about the unfolding situation and coordinated closely with local authorities. “RCB mourns the tragic loss of lives and extend our heartfelt condolences to the affected families. Immediately upon being made aware of the situation, we promptly amended our program, and followed, the guidance and advice of the local administration. We urge all our supporters to please stay safe,” the statement added.
Star player Virat Kohli also addressed the incident through Instagram, where he reposted RCB’s official message and offered his own brief but emotional response: “At a loss for words. Absolutely gutted.”
The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), in partnership with RCB, announced a financial assistance package of ₹5 lakh for the families of the deceased. In a joint statement, the two organizations clarified that the compensation was a gesture of empathy rather than a measure of life’s value.
“RCB – KSCA announces 5 lakhs to the families of those who have lost their loved ones. We hope this gesture can offer some support and solace in their time of grief,” the statement read.
“We want to emphasize that this compensation is not intended to determine or replace the value of human life, but rather to serve as a gesture of support and solidarity during such challenging times. Thank you for your understanding and support,” it continued.
Meanwhile, criticism has mounted over the event’s organization, with many questioning why the celebrations were allowed to continue even after early reports of the stampede began emerging. Authorities are expected to launch a formal inquiry into the matter.
