Lucknow: Prateek Yadav, stepbrother of Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav and husband of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Aparna Yadav, died in Lucknow on Wednesday morning. He was 38 years old.
According to sources, Prateek Yadav was rushed to Civil Hospital around 6 am, where doctors declared him brought dead. The precise cause of his death remains undisclosed. Authorities are conducting a post-mortem examination, and additional details are expected shortly.
Prateek Yadav was the son of Sadhana Gupta, the second wife of Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam Singh Yadav. Although he belonged to one of Uttar Pradesh’s most influential political families, he chose to remain largely detached from active politics. He pursued higher studies at the University of Leeds in the UK and later focused on business and fitness initiatives in Lucknow. He owned and operated “The Fitness Planet,” a popular gymnasium in the city, and was widely recognized for his dedication to health and wellness.
His wife, Aparna Yadav, has maintained an active political profile. She contested the 2017 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections from the Lucknow Cantt constituency on a Samajwadi Party ticket but was defeated by Rita Bahuguna Joshi. In 2022, she joined the BJP and was appointed vice-chairperson of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission in 2024.
Prateek and Aparna married in 2011 in a high-profile ceremony at the Yadav family’s ancestral village of Saifai in Etawah district. Earlier this year, Prateek had publicly addressed tensions in their marriage. In a post on his verified Instagram account, he accused his wife of damaging his family relationships and expressed his intention to pursue divorce. He claimed she was primarily driven by a desire for fame and influence, adding that he was experiencing significant mental stress.
The news has drawn attention across political circles in Uttar Pradesh given the family’s prominence. Further updates on the circumstances surrounding Prateek Yadav’s death are awaited as investigations continue.
