Huge earthquake hits Myanmar, buildings collapse, emergency declared in Bangkok

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the quake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers, with its epicenter located approximately 50 kilometers east of Monywa, a city in central Myanmar.

In Bangkok, the impact was immediate and dramatic, as hundreds of residents poured out of buildings in a state of panic. Witnesses described chaotic scenes in the Thai capital, with people fleeing onto the streets and water spilling out of swimming pools due to the intense shaking. Myanmar’s capital, observed significant structural damage, including buckled roads and falling ceiling fragments, underscoring the quake’s force.

The tremor’s reach extended beyond Myanmar and Thailand, with reports confirming that it was also felt in Delhi-NCR, India, highlighting the event’s broad regional impact. In Thailand, the Department of Disaster Prevention noted that the earthquake’s effects were experienced across nearly every part of the country, amplifying concerns in a nation where millions reside in high-rise buildings, particularly in the greater Bangkok area, home to over 17 million people.
