Modi Embarks on Diplomatic Tour to Boost Regional Ties in Thailand and Sri Lanka

Prime Minister Narendra Modi departed on Thursday for Thailand to participate in the sixth BIMSTEC summit, marking the start of a diplomatic journey that will also take him to Sri Lanka for his first trip to the island nation since its recent presidential election.

In a statement before his departure, Modi emphasized the importance of BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) as a key platform driving regional growth, connectivity, and economic advancement in the Bay of Bengal area over the last ten years. He noted that India’s North Eastern region plays a central role in this initiative due to its strategic geographic position. “I am eager to meet with BIMSTEC leaders and work together constructively to deepen our partnership, keeping the welfare of our citizens at the forefront,” he said.

While in Thailand, Modi anticipates discussions with Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and other Thai officials, aiming to enhance the deep-rooted historical relationship between the two nations. This bond, he remarked, is built on a shared heritage of culture, philosophy, and spiritual values.

Following his engagements in Thailand, Modi will travel to Sri Lanka on April 4 for a two-day visit. The trip comes on the heels of Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s productive visit to India in December. Modi stated that the visit would allow both leaders to assess advancements under their joint vision, “Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future,” and offer direction to achieve their mutual goals.

The prime minister expressed optimism that these visits would reinforce the strong ties established over the years, benefiting not only the people of India, Thailand, and Sri Lanka but also the broader region.
