
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his condolences to Myanmar on Saturday after a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the country. In a conversation with Myanmar’s junta chief, General Min Aung Hlaing, PM Modi expressed India’s support and solidarity during this challenging time.
India has initiated ‘Operation Brahma,’ under which humanitarian assistance and disaster relief materials are being sent to Myanmar. Additionally, specialized search and rescue teams are being deployed to aid the affected areas.
“Spoke with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Conveyed our deep condolences at the loss of lives in the devastating earthquake. As a close friend and neighbour, India stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar in this difficult hour. Disaster relief material, humanitarian assistance, and search & rescue teams are being expeditiously dispatched to the affected areas as part of Operation Brahma,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
NDRF Team Dispatched for Rescue Operations
A contingent of 80 personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been airlifted to Myanmar to assist in search and rescue efforts. According to officials, the team departed from Hindon Air Force Station in Ghaziabad aboard two IAF sorties and is expected to reach Myanmar by Saturday evening.
Commandant P K Tiwary from the 8th NDRF battalion is leading the Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) team. Equipped with advanced rescue tools like concrete cutters, drills, and hammers, the team also includes trained rescue dogs to aid in locating survivors. The operations will adhere to the standards of the International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG).
The devastating earthquake, which also impacted neighboring Thailand, has caused significant damage to buildings, bridges, and infrastructure. As per reports, over 1,000 people have died in Myanmar, with many more injured. Relief efforts are ongoing as teams continue their operations in the affected regions.
