Mumbai to Get Bike Taxis at ₹3/km as Transport Ministry Approves

Mumbai – Commuters in Mumbai can soon expect faster and cheaper travel options with the planned introduction of bike taxi services. The Maharashtra state transport department is finalizing a policy to launch these services, with an official rollout anticipated as early as the end of March or beginning of April, according to Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik.
The proposed bike taxi service will offer rides at a rate of just ₹3 per kilometer, significantly undercutting existing taxi and auto-rickshaw fares. Safety and regulation are key components of the plan, with mandatory GPS installation on all bike taxis and helmet use for pillion riders. The taxis will also be easily identifiable by their yellow color.
This initiative follows a previous attempt by Rapido to launch bike taxi services in Mumbai, which was halted due to opposition from traditional taxi and rickshaw unions. However, the government has now given the green light again, outlining specific rules and conditions, particularly focused on ensuring the safety of women passengers.
Transport Minister Sarnaik highlighted that bike taxi services are already successful in 22 other Indian states, and their lower fares are a major advantage compared to car taxis, auto-rickshaws, and ride-hailing services. The new service is also projected to generate between 10,000 and 20,000 jobs for young people in Maharashtra, while offering a more economical mode of transport for the public.
The bike taxi plan is part of the Chief Minister’s 100-day action plan, underscoring the government’s commitment to its swift implementation. A comprehensive policy and set of guidelines have been developed and are awaiting approval from the state legislature, paving the way for the official launch of bike taxi services in Mumbai.
