Maharashtra Bypolls 2026: Low Early Turnout In Baramati And Rahuri Voting

Mumbai: According to a report by The Free Press Journal, voting for the by-elections in Maharashtra’s Baramati and Rahuri assembly constituencies began on Thursday morning with a relatively low turnout in the initial hours. Election officials stated that between 6 to 8 per cent of voters exercised their franchise during the first two hours of polling.

In Baramati, approximately 8 per cent voter turnout was recorded, while Rahuri witnessed around 6 per cent participation during the same period. Polling commenced at 7 am and is scheduled to continue until 6 pm, giving voters ample time to cast their ballots throughout the day.

The Baramati bypoll was necessitated following the death of former Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar in an air crash earlier this year. His wife, Sunetra Pawar, who is also serving as Deputy Chief Minister and NCP chief, is among the key candidates contesting the seat. The constituency has drawn attention due to its political significance and the number of candidates in the fray.

Meanwhile, Rahuri is witnessing a multi-cornered contest, adding to the competitive nature of the election. Authorities have made arrangements to ensure smooth polling, particularly in view of the prevailing heat conditions. Measures such as voter assistance and facilities at polling stations have been put in place to encourage participation and ensure convenience for voters.

Despite the slow start, officials expect voter turnout to increase as the day progresses. The by-elections are being closely watched, given their political implications in the state.
