Kannada Star Ranya Rao Nabbed in Stunning Gold Smuggling Sting – ₹17.29 Crore Haul Seized
NEW DELHI: In a dramatic turn of events, Kannada actress Ranya Rao was taken into custody at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on Wednesday. Authorities allege that the actress was involved in smuggling gold from Dubai, a case that has now raised serious questions about her travel patterns and methods.
Ranya Rao was intercepted by officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) as she was preparing to clear airport security. During the search, nearly 15 kilograms of gold bars valued at approximately ₹12.56 crore were discovered concealed in a modified jacket. Investigations reveal that Rao, who is also the stepdaughter of a senior Karnataka IPS officer, has been under scrutiny for her frequent trips to Dubai, reportedly making as many as 30 journeys in the past year alone.
According to sources familiar with the case, the actress allegedly smuggled gold on each trip, earning an estimated ₹1 lakh per kilogram. This operation reportedly netted her around ₹12-13 lakh per journey. In a bid to evade detection, Rao is said to have repeatedly used specially altered jackets and waist belts during her travels.
The DRI’s vigilance appears to have paid off, as prior intelligence led to a frisking that uncovered the hidden gold. During her arrest, Rao identified herself as the daughter of IPS officer Ramachandra Rao, who currently holds a senior post within the Karnataka police. However, despite this connection, the evidence gathered by authorities has led to her immediate detention. Further complicating the matter, additional assets worth ₹4.73 crore were also seized, bringing the total value involved in the case to roughly ₹17.29 crore.
In response to the incident, Ramachandra Rao expressed his shock and dismay over his stepdaughter’s arrest. “I was shocked and devastated when I learned about this incident through the media. I was not aware of any such activities. She lives separately with her husband, and there may be personal issues at play, but the law will take its course,” he told reporters, adding that his own career remains untarnished by the scandal.
The arrest of Ranya Rao marks a significant development in an ongoing investigation into alleged gold smuggling from Dubai.
