Moscow : India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin on Thursday, reinforcing the robust ties between New Delhi and Moscow. The meeting followed Jaishankar’s extensive discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, which centered on enhancing trade relations between the two nations. Jaishankar’s three-day visit to Russia included co-chairing the 26th India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological, and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) and addressing the India-Russia Business Forum.
During a joint media briefing with Lavrov, Jaishankar emphasized the enduring strength of India-Russia relations, stating, “We believe that relations between India and Russia have been among the steadiest of the major relationships in the world after the Second World War.” He highlighted geopolitical alignment, frequent leadership interactions, and public support as key drivers of this partnership. The talks come amid heightened U.S. tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods, a move by the Trump administration tied to India’s continued purchase of Russian crude oil, which Washington claims indirectly supports Russia’s actions in Ukraine.
Jaishankar’s discussions with Lavrov focused on expanding bilateral trade in a balanced manner, addressing non-tariff barriers, and boosting Indian exports in sectors like pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and textiles. The ministers also reviewed cooperation in energy, defense, and cultural exchanges, while discussing regional issues, including Ukraine and West Asia, with an emphasis on resolving conflicts through dialogue. Jaishankar conveyed greetings from President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Putin, updating him on preparations for the upcoming India-Russia Annual Leaders Summit.
The meeting underscores India’s commitment to maintaining its “time-tested” strategic partnership with Russia, despite global geopolitical challenges. Both nations reaffirmed their intent to deepen economic ties and ensure resilience against external pressures, such as sanctions, by exploring independent financial and logistical systems. The Russian Foreign Ministry shared visuals of the meeting on X, highlighting the strong bilateral engagement.
