Iran Closes Skies Without Warning : Delhi-Bound IndiGo Flight From Georgia Makes Dramatic Escape

New Delhi : An IndiGo flight from Tbilisi, Georgia to Delhi was reportedly the last non-Iranian plane in the air before Tehran suddenly closed its airspace on Thursday amid the spiralling unrest. Iran shut its airspace early Thursday, issuing a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) that halted most flights except a limited number of approved international ones.

Iran has extended its airspace closure as tensions remain high amid the regime’s violent crackdown on anti-Khamenei protests, which has claimed the lives of over 2,400 protesters in the two weeks since unrest erupted on December 28. According to live flight tracking site Flightradar24, IndiGo flight 6E1808 departed Tbilisi at 11.29am on Wednesday and landed in Delhi at 7.03am Thursday. The aircraft passed over Iranian airspace around 2.35am.

IndiGo, Air India, SpiceJet have warned of possible flight disruptions. The airlines have requested passengers on affected international flights to check the status of their journeys and explore available alternatives. On its part, IndiGo confirmed that some of its international flights have been impacted, adding that it was working to support affected customers by offering rebooking options or refunds.

Air India stated that flights over the region are being rerouted where possible, which may cause delays, while flights that cannot be rerouted have been cancelled. Meanwhile, SpiceJet also warned that some flights may be affected and passengers should check the status of their flights before heading out to the airport. Without explanation, Iran closed its airspace to commercial flights in the early hours of Thursday.

However, there were no signs of current hostilities though the closure immediately rippled through global aviation because Iran is located on a key East-West route for airlines. A series of rapid emergency moves, including Iran’s airspace closure and the US pulling off troops from its largest military base in the Middle East, is fueling speculation that an attack on Tehran could be imminent, following days of President Donald Trump’s threats to strike the Islamic Republic in response to its crackdown on protesters.
