New Delhi : The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has introduced the topic of the 1975–77 Emergency in the Class 9 Social Science syllabus for the first time under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. The topic has been added to Chapter 6 of the new Social Science textbook, Understanding Society: India and Beyond (Grade 9, Part 1). This is a major change in the way modern Indian history is taught in schools.
Earlier, students mainly studied the Emergency in detail in Class 12 Political Science. They learned about its impact on politics, the Constitution, and democracy. Now, Class 9 students will learn about the Emergency at a much earlier stage. NCERT says this change is aimed at helping students better understand India’s Constitution, democratic values, and modern history.
The update is part of NCERT’s larger curriculum revision under NEP 2020, which focuses on making education more practical, multidisciplinary, and connected to India’s history and constitutional development. The new textbook also places greater emphasis on civic awareness, constitutional principles, and understanding how India’s democracy has evolved over time.
The change is especially significant because 2026 marks 51 years since the Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975. The Emergency lasted until March 1977 and is considered one of the most important periods in India’s political history. During this time, civil liberties were suspended, the press was censored, and elections were delayed. By including the Emergency in the Class 9 syllabus, NCERT hopes to give students an earlier understanding of this important chapter in India’s democratic history.
