NEW DELHI: CP Radhakrishnan was officially sworn in as India’s 15th Vice President on Friday at a ceremonial event held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. President Droupadi Murmu administered the oath, marking a significant moment in the nation’s political landscape. The event drew prominent leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, alongside former vice presidents Jagdeep Dhankhar, Venkaiah Naidu, and Hamid Ansari.
Radhakrishnan, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate, secured his position after a decisive victory in Tuesday’s vice-presidential election, garnering 452 votes against the opposition’s candidate, former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy, who received 300 votes. The election followed the unexpected resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar in July, prompted by health concerns.
The swearing-in ceremony, attended by senior political figures, underscored Radhakrishnan’s transition to the second-highest constitutional office in India. Sources cited by news agency ANI noted that September 12 was selected for the oath-taking due to its auspicious timing, as advised by a pandit.
Radhakrishnan, previously the Governor of Maharashtra, brings extensive experience from his political career, including roles as a BJP MP and governor of multiple states. His election reinforces the NDA’s strong parliamentary presence, with the alliance holding a clear majority in the electoral college.
The presence of former Vice President Dhankhar at the ceremony added a layer of continuity to the event, despite his abrupt exit from the office earlier this year. Radhakrishnan’s tenure is expected to uphold the constitutional responsibilities of the office, with leaders expressing confidence in his ability to contribute to India’s parliamentary traditions.
