Controversy Erupts at DU Over Syllabus Changes; Inclusion of Manusmriti and Baburnama Sparks Protests

New Delhi: Controversy Erupts at Delhi University Over Syllabus Changes A fresh controversy has emerged at Delhi University (DU) over proposed changes to the syllabus, with discussions about including historical texts like Manusmriti and Baburnama sparking opposition from students and faculty members. Some departments at DU have proposed incorporating these texts into undergraduate courses, leading to strong reactions.

What is the Issue?

DU’s History and Philosophy departments have suggested adding Manusmriti and Baburnama to the undergraduate curriculum. According to the proposal, Manusmriti was to be studied for insights into Indian philosophy and social structures, while Baburnama was intended to help students understand medieval history and Mughal rule. The university administration argues that these texts would aid students in comprehending the cultural, social, and political dynamics of ancient and medieval India. However, student organizations and a significant section of the teaching community have opposed this move.

Why is Manusmriti Controversial?

Manusmriti, also known as the Manu Samhita, is an ancient Hindu text that defines social norms, duties, and legal frameworks. It has been widely criticized for its stance on caste hierarchy and gender roles. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar famously burned the text in 1927, condemning it as a symbol of caste discrimination and oppression.

Opposing students argue that Manusmriti contradicts modern India’s inclusive and egalitarian values. Supporters, however, maintain that the text should be studied in its historical context rather than judged solely through a modern moral lens.

Why is Baburnama Controversial?

Baburnama, the autobiography of Mughal emperor Babur, is considered a significant historical document detailing his life, battles, and rule. While some advocate for its inclusion as a valuable primary source on medieval history, critics argue that teaching it at a time when issues like the Ayodhya dispute and Babri Masjid remain sensitive could reignite communal tensions.

Students and Teachers Join the Protest

A section of DU faculty has also raised concerns. The Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) released a statement emphasizing the need for thorough consultation before altering the syllabus, warning that hasty decisions could harm the university’s reputation. Political parties like the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have accused the ruling BJP of trying to “saffronize” education.

What is the University’s Response?

DU administration has not yet made a final decision on the proposal. The matter will be discussed in detail in the upcoming Academic Council meeting. Until then, the controversy shows no signs of subsiding, with students vowing to continue their protests until their demands are met.
