Celebrations Turn Violent in Mhow Madhya Pradesh After India Cricket Victory

MHOW – Post-match celebrations following India’s ICC Champions Trophy win ignited communal clashes in Madhya Pradesh on Sunday, March 9th. The unrest erupted in Mhow after a celebratory rally, marking India’s victory, allegedly passed near the Jama Masjid.
Reports indicate that participants in the rally were chanting provocative slogans and setting off firecrackers. During Ramadan prayers at the mosque, individuals reportedly responded by throwing stones at the rally, triggering a significant confrontation between the two groups.
The ensuing violence resulted in the vandalism of numerous vehicles, with reports confirming that at least two vehicles and two shops were set ablaze by the mob. In response to the escalating violence, authorities deployed a large contingent of police officers from both rural Indore and Indore city to restore order in the area.

Speaking to the press, Indore Rural Superintendent of Police (SP) Hitika Vasal stated that tensions had arisen between two groups, leading to violent incidents. “The events unfolded after the Indian team’s victory and appear to be linked to the use of firecrackers,” SP Vasal explained. She assured the public that the situation was now “completely under control” and emphasized the police were actively patrolling the area. “We are committed to a thorough investigation, and appropriate actions will be taken. Those found responsible will face legal consequences,” she added. SP Vasal also confirmed initial reports of three injuries and stated that further investigations are ongoing.

Adding to this, Indore Collector Ashish Singh confirmed the situation was under control and that additional forces had been deployed. “The precise sequence of events will be determined through investigation,” Collector Singh stated, reiterating that, “As of now, the situation is under control.”
