Konaseema : Panic gripped Ambedkar Konaseema district of Andhra Pradesh after a gas leak at an oil well operated by Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s (ONGC) production contractor caught fire on Monday. Residents said the gas spread like a thick mist and entered residential areas, triggering fear among villagers.
As a precautionary measure, officials evacuated people from nearby houses and shifted them to safer locations to avoid any untoward incidents. According to preliminary information, the incident occurred when production at the well suddenly halted and workover rig operations were underway. During the process, a large volume of gas mixed with crude oil reportedly gushed out with force, spreading rapidly towards the village.
Rajole Circle Inspector Naresh Kumar is supervising the situation on the ground and monitoring security and safety arrangements. Authorities said the exact cause of the alleged gas leak and details of any damage are yet to be ascertained. Efforts are underway to bring the situation under control, and a detailed assessment will be carried out.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu inquired about the gas leakage reported from the ONGC drill site at Irsumanda village in Malikipuram mandal of Rajole constituency. The Chief Minister spoke to Ministers Atchannaidu and Vasamsetti Subhash, along with senior officials, to review the situation. The Ministers informed the Chief Minister that they had already been in touch with local authorities regarding the incident and suggested that relief and precautionary measures be intensified.
