Chennai : Actor-politician Vijay has started reaching out personally through video calls to the families of those who died in a stampede during his rally in Tamil Nadu’s Karur last month. Sources from the Tamil superstar’s team said the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief has so far spoken to 4–5 people, including women and children, who lost loved ones in the stampede.
Neither the BJP nor the ruling DMK have explicitly attacked Vijay over the September 27 incident. Sources said that Vijay assured the families that he would visit them in person soon and was not able to do so presently due to certain difficulties. While several TVK functionaries have been arrested in connection with the incident, Vijay himself has not been named in any FIR.
This aspect was raised by the Madras High Court last week as it blasted the TVK chief’s failure to show remorse for the tragedy and condemned the party’s reckless conduct. Justice N Senthilkumar also ordered the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) led by senior IPS officer Asra Garg to probe the stampede.
