3 Men Rape Odisha Girl, Two Brothers Arrested, Hunt To Track Down Third Accused Underway

Odisha : A minor girl was allegedly gangraped multiple times by three men before they attempted to bury her alive to conceal their crime in Odisha’s Jagatpur district. According to sources, two brothers – Bhagyadhar Das and Panchanan Das – of Banashbara village in Jagatpur and their accomplice identified as Tulu Babu allegedly repeatedly assaulted the girl over an extended period of time.

After discovering that the girl was five-months pregnant, the three accused tried to bury her alive to cover up the crime. However, the girl was rescued in time. The survivor was admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital for medical treatment, where she is under constant observation of doctors.

The survivor’s father lodged a formal complaint against the accused at the nearest police station, on the basis of which a case was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). While Bhagyadhar Das and Panchanan Das were caught, Tulu Babu managed to flee the village and remains at large as a manhunt to track him down is ongoing.

A similar case was reported in Malkangiri district. A minor girl was kidnapped by three men who gang-raped her. She managed to escape their clutches, but was raped by a truck driver she encountered on her way home. Over the past month, at least 12 rapes have been reported across the state. In June this year, five rape and gang-rape cases were reported in the state within a 10-day period.

Earlier this month, a 20-year-old student at Fakir Mohan Autonomous College in Balasore died after setting herself on fire, reportedly due to the dismissal of her sexual harassment complaint against a teacher.
