Major Cloudflare Glitching Takes Down X (Twiter), ChatGPT and Multiple Websites

Multiple online platforms including X, the social media service previously known as Twitter, experienced widespread disruptions following a technical failure at Cloudflare, a major internet infrastructure provider that delivers critical services to websites and digital platforms.

The outage prevented X users from viewing existing content or posting new messages on the platform. Downdetector, a widely-used service for tracking website failures, was itself rendered inaccessible during the incident.

Update: While the primary technical problems appear to have been addressed, certain platforms including X and ChatGPT continue experiencing residual issues. Cloudflare’s most recent statement indicated that “services were starting to recover,” though the company cautioned that “customers may continue to observe higher-than-normal error rates.”

Cloudflare publicly acknowledged the technical disruption, confirming its impact across numerous client websites. In a statement posted on its platform, the company noted: “Cloudflare is aware of, and investigating an issue which potentially impacts multiple customers.” The statement promised additional information as the situation developed, according to The Independent.

Those attempting to reach affected websites encountered error notifications stating “internal server error on Cloudflare’s network, please try again in a few minutes.” Reports indicate the disruption commenced at 5 pm IST.

The incident follows closely on the heels of a significant Amazon Web Services (AWS) failure that disrupted operations for Amazon, Snapchat, and WhatsApp. That outage originated from AWS’s longest-running data facility in Virginia, USA, where the Domain Name System (DNS) the technology enabling browser-based website access malfunctioned, leaving hundreds of platforms unreachable, including those serving financial institutions and aviation companies.

Cloudflare has not yet disclosed the underlying cause of its service interruption, leaving users uncertain about when full platform functionality will return to services like X.
