Renowned AI researcher and OpenAI co-founder Andrej Karpathy has officially joined Anthropic, marking a major development in the ongoing competition for top artificial intelligence talent. According to India Today, Karpathy announced the move through a post on X, stating that he believes the coming years will play a crucial role in shaping the future of large language models (LLMs).
Karpathy is expected to work in Anthropic’s research and development division, specifically within the team responsible for Claude’s pretraining process. The division is led by Nicholas Joseph and handles the large-scale training systems that provide Claude with its foundational capabilities and knowledge.
As reported by India Today, Karpathy will also help establish a new team aimed at using Claude itself to accelerate pretraining research. The initiative is expected to support Anthropic’s efforts to automate important stages of AI model development.
Karpathy co-founded OpenAI before joining Tesla in 2017, where he led the automaker’s AI operations for more than five years. He later returned briefly to OpenAI after leaving Tesla in 2022 and subsequently launched Eureka Labs, an AI-focused education startup.
India Today noted that Karpathy gained widespread attention after popularising the term “vibe coding,” which refers to the use of AI systems for writing code. In recent years, he has also built a strong following on YouTube and X through educational content and technical discussions related to artificial intelligence.
The report further stated that Anthropic’s hiring of Karpathy comes at a time when competition among leading AI firms for experienced researchers continues to grow rapidly.
