Why are Indian women cricketers wearing pink today?

New Delhi: When the Indian women cricketers stepped onto the field here today for the third and deciding ODI against Australia, it marked a historic moment in India’s women’s cricket. Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the Indian players appeared in pink kits, as they wore them to spread awareness about breast cancer.

With breast cancer cases on the rise among women, the Indian cricketers wore pink jerseys and trousers to promote awareness about prevention and care for those suffering from this deadly disease.

This is the very first time that the Indian cricket team has worn a pink dress to spread breast cancer awareness.

In Australia, players traditionally wear pink during the New Year’s Test match in Sydney, popularly known as the “Pink Test.” That match is played in support of former Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath’s foundation. The proceeds from the Pink Test go towards helping cancer patients. Glenn McGrath’s wife, Jane McGrath, had passed away due to breast cancer, and since then, Australian players have honored the cause by donning pink during the Sydney Test every year in December.
