Vaibhav Suryavanshi Breaks Shubman Gill’s Record in U-19 ODI Series Win

Worcester: In a standout performance, 14-year-old Indian opener Vaibhav Suryavanshi has broken an 8-year-old record held by Shubman Gill during the recently concluded Under-19 ODI series against England. India may have lost the final match of the series on Monday, but under the captaincy of Ayush Mhatre, the visitors clinched the series 3-2.
Vaibhav emerged as the top run-scorer of the series with 355 runs at an impressive average of 71.00 and a strike rate of 174.01, surpassing Shubman Gill’s tally of 351 runs from the 2017 U-19 series in England. England U-19 captain Thomas Rew was second on the list with 280 runs.
The previous record for most runs in a youth ODI bilateral series against England was held by Gill (351 runs in 2017), while Ambati Rayudu (291 runs in 2002), Gill again (278 in 2017), and Aditya Sreekanth (244 runs in 2005) follow on the all-time list.
Vaibhav’s scores across the five-match series were:
48, 45, 86, 143, and 33 – with the standout performance being his 143-run knock, in which he completed his century in just 52 balls, now the fastest century in Youth ODIs.
In a poetic twist, during the series break, the BCCI invited Vaibhav to watch the Indian senior team’s Test match at Edgbaston. He was spotted sitting in the stands alongside captain Ayush Mhatre and teammates, watching none other than Shubman Gill bat – the very player whose record he would soon eclipse.
