Shubman Gill Eyes Historic Records in Test Series vs England

LONDON: India captain Shubman Gill, already the leading run-scorer of the ongoing Test series against England with 585 runs, is poised to break a flurry of world and Indian records as the third Test begins at Lord’s today at 3:30 PM IST.

Gill, who scored 430 runs in the second Test alone, has three more matches (up to six innings) to chase down some of cricket’s most iconic milestones:

Records Within Shubman Gill’s Reach:

  1. Most Runs as a Captain in a Series (World Record):

Don Bradman scored 810 runs in the 1936 Ashes – his first series as captain.

Gill needs 225 more runs to break this.

  1. Most Runs in a Single Test Series (World Record):

Bradman again holds the record: 974 runs in the 1930 Ashes.

Gill requires 390 more runs to surpass this.

Dilip Vengsarkar recently said:
“Gill can break Bradman’s record. He’s in brilliant form and shouldn’t let this opportunity go.”

  1. Fastest 1000 Runs as Test Captain:

Bradman reached 1000 captaincy runs in 11 innings.

Gill, needing 415 more runs, has potentially 6 innings left to beat this.

  1. Most Centuries in a Single Test Series:

Record: 5 centuries by Clyde Walcott (WI) vs Australia, 1955.

Gill already has 3 centuries in the current series.

  1. Most Centuries as a Captain in a Series vs India:

Bradman had 4 centuries as captain vs India in 1947.

Sunil Gavaskar had 4 as player in 1971 and as captain in 1978-79.

Gill needs 2 more centuries to top this.

Indian Records Within Gill’s Grasp:

Most Runs by an Indian in a Test Series:

Sunil Gavaskar scored 732 runs vs West Indies in 1978.

Gill needs just 148 more runs.

Most Runs by an Indian in a Test Series in England:

Rahul Dravid scored 602 runs in 2002.

Gill is just 18 runs away from breaking it.

Most Runs by an Indian Captain in a Series vs England:

Virat Kohli scored 655 runs in 2018.

Gill needs 91 runs to break this.

With Gill in top form and India aiming for a series lead, the stage at Lord’s is perfectly set for the 24-year-old to etch his name alongside legends like Bradman, Gavaskar, and Kohli — or perhaps even above them.
