Gill enjoyed a dream day on Day 2, surpassing Rohit Sharma and equalling MS Dhoni’s record for the most hundreds as captain of the Indian Test team. The 26-year-old continued his stellar run with the bat, registering his fifth century as captain and reaching the three-figure mark in front of a lively Delhi crowd during the second session on Saturday. In addition, Gill equalled Virat Kohli’s record for the most hundreds by an Indian captain in Tests within a calendar year, matching Kohli’s feat of five centuries achieved in both 2017 and 2018.
He remained unbeaten on 129 off 196 balls, striking 16 fours and two sixes, as India declared their innings at 518 for five. Following Roston Chase’s dismissal of Dhruv Jurel, Gill promptly opted to declare, demonstrating both his tactical acumen and composure under pressure.
