Ashwin Bows Out of IPL, Sets Sights on Global Leagues

Veteran Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has announced his retirement from the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking the end of a distinguished 16-year career in the tournament. The celebrated off-spinner shared the news via a social media post on August 27, 2025, expressing gratitude to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the IPL franchises he represented. Ashwin’s decision follows his retirement from international cricket in December 2024, after a stellar career that saw him become India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests.
In his announcement, Ashwin described the day as a “special beginning,” noting that while his IPL journey has concluded, he is eager to explore new opportunities in various global cricket leagues. “Every ending will have a new start,” he wrote on X, thanking the IPL and its franchises for the memories and relationships forged over the years. Ashwin’s IPL career began in 2009 with Chennai Super Kings (CSK), and he went on to play for Rising Pune Supergiant, Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals, amassing 187 wickets in 221 matches.
Ashwin’s legacy in the IPL is notable, particularly with CSK, where he played a key role in their title triumphs in 2010 and 2011. His tactical acumen and versatility made him a standout performer, with a career economy rate of 7.20 and a best bowling figure of 4/34. Beyond his bowling, Ashwin contributed 833 runs with the bat, including a half-century. His final IPL season in 2025 saw him return to CSK, though his performance was below expectations, with seven wickets in nine matches.
The announcement comes amid speculation about Ashwin’s future with CSK, as the franchise reportedly considered releasing him ahead of the 2026 season. Ashwin’s shift to global leagues aligns with BCCI policy, which allows Indian players to participate in overseas tournaments only after retiring from international cricket and the IPL.
