Rajasthan Royals Announce Riyan Parag as Stand-in Captain for Initial IPL Matches

Rajasthan Royals have made a surprising announcement just days before IPL 2025 kicks off. Although Sanju Samson is widely regarded as a key leader for the team, the franchise revealed that he will not lead in the first three matches due to a lingering finger injury. Instead, the captaincy will be handed over to batter Riyan Parag during this initial period.

The decision comes as the Royals prepare for a busy schedule starting March 22, with Kolkata Knight Riders facing Royal Challengers Bengaluru at Eden Gardens. Rajasthan Royals are set to begin their campaign against Sunrisers Hyderabad on March 23. However, Samson’s recovery is still underway, and he has yet to receive clearance for his wicketkeeping and fielding responsibilities. The team emphasized that while Samson will miss captaincy duties temporarily, he remains an essential part of the side and will contribute as a specialist batter until he is fit to resume his full role.

Samson, who returned to the squad after undergoing finger surgery following an injury sustained during India’s T20I series against England in February, is expected to reclaim the captaincy once he is fully recovered. The franchise’s confidence in Riyan Parag is evident, as his leadership skills were honed during his tenure as Assam’s domestic captain and through his experience with the Royals.

The team’s first two home games are scheduled at the ACA Stadium in Guwahati against Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings on March 26 and March 30, respectively. For the remainder of their home fixtures, Rajasthan Royals will play at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur.

After clinching the inaugural IPL title in 2008 and making a strong showing last season by finishing third on the points table, the Royals will be eager to build on past successes despite the early setback of their captain’s temporary absence.
