R. Ashwin Exonerated in TNPL Ball-Tampering Row; Accusers Face Potential Disciplinary Action

Dindigul Dragons captain R Ashwin has been cleared of ball-tampering allegations in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) following a thorough investigation by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA). The accusations, leveled by Siechem Madurai Panthers after a nine-wicket defeat on Saturday, June 14, claimed Ashwin and his team used chemical-laced towels to alter the ball’s condition.

The TNCA found no evidence to support the Panthers’ claims. “The towels were standard TNCA-issued items, accessible to both teams,” TNPL CEO Prasanna Kannan stated. “Umpires and the match referee monitored the ball throughout the game, and no issues were raised during play. The allegations appear to be speculative and lack verifiable evidence.”

The Panthers have until 3 PM on Tuesday, June 17, to formally request an independent inquiry, provided they submit credible evidence such as videos, photos, or testimonials. The TNCA also issued a stern warning, noting that “baseless or defamatory allegations” could lead to disciplinary measures under the TNCA Code of Conduct and Operational Rules.

In the match in question, played in Salem, the Panthers posted 150 batting first. Ashwin, bowling for the Dragons, finished with figures of 4-0-27-0. He then opened the batting, scoring a brisk 49 off 29 balls, partnering with Shivam Singh (86 not out) for a match-winning 124-run stand.
