Dubai: After India crushed Pakistan for the second time in just eight days in the Asia Cup, criticism has poured in not just from India but also from within Pakistan. Among the harshest voices was that of their own former leg-spinner Danish Kaneria, from a well-known Gujarati Vaishnav family.
Kaneria mocked opener Sahibzada Farhan, who had celebrated with an AK-47-style gesture after scoring runs. He said: “Farhan may have acted like he was firing an AK-47 with his bat, but then Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill launched BrahMos missiles with theirs. After reaching his half-century, Abhishek even kissed his bat — that’s how the game should be played.”
Batting first, Pakistan posted 171/5 in 20 overs, with Sahibzada Farhan top-scoring with 58. In reply, India chased down the target in 18.5 overs, finishing at 174/4 to secure a commanding six-wicket victory.
India’s bowling was led by Shivam Dube (2 wickets for 33 runs), while in batting, Abhishek Sharma (74 off 39, 5 sixes, 6 fours), Shubman Gill (47 off 28, 8 fours), and Tilak Varma (30 off 19, 2 sixes, 2 fours) played the biggest roles. Abhishek and Gill put on a blistering 105-run opening stand in just 10 overs.
Speaking to a leading news agency after the match, Kaneria summed it up sharply: “On Sunday, Pakistan first got a thrashing — and then a mega thrashing.”
