Indian javelin star Neeraj Chopra crossed a major milestone in his career at the Doha Diamond League, surpassing the elusive 90-metre mark for the first time. Despite a backdrop of off-field controversies and cancelled events, Chopra delivered a standout performance, throwing 90.23 metres on his third attempt to become only the third Asian and 25th athlete globally to achieve the feat.
Leading the competition until Germany’s Julian Weber overtook him with a final effort of 91.06 metres, Chopra still celebrated his achievement as a defining moment. “It’s not just my burden that’s lifted — it’s off the shoulders of all Indians,” Chopra told RevSportz, acknowledging the years of anticipation and public pressure since his pursuit of the 90m mark began in 2018.
Chopra’s preparation was impacted by the cancellation of the Neeraj Chopra Classic, attributed to tensions along the India-Pakistan border. In the lead-up to the Diamond League event, media attention shifted to Chopra’s relationship with Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, with Chopra clarifying that the two were never close friends.
However, Chopra set the distractions aside when it mattered most. The Olympic champion credited his coach, Czech legend Jan Zelezny under whose guidance he’s been training since February — for helping fine-tune his technique. “I’m happy with breaching 90m, but we’re still working on improving,” Chopra told reporters in Doha, adding that he feels physically stronger this year after dealing with groin discomfort in previous seasons.
Looking ahead to the World Championships in Tokyo this September, the 27-year-old is confident more 90m-plus throws are on the horizon. “This is just the start of the season,” he said. “I believe I can throw even farther.”
Chopra’s breakthrough marks a significant step forward not only for his personal goals but for Indian athletics, as he continues to inspire a nation with his determination and discipline.
