Josh Hazlewood Out of Initial T20 World Cup 2026 Games; Abbott To Provide Cover

Australia’s preparations for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have been disrupted once again with fast bowler Josh Hazlewood expected to miss the early phase of the tournament due to ongoing injury rehabilitation. According to reports, the pacer will remain in Sydney to continue his recovery from an Achilles injury, delaying his travel to Sri Lanka where Australia will begin its campaign.

National selector Tony Dodemaide confirmed on Monday that Hazlewood will not join the squad for the initial matches, which start on February 7, with Australia scheduled to play four group‑stage games in Colombo and Pallekele, beginning against Ireland on February 11.

In response to Hazlewood’s absence, Sean Abbott has been included as a travelling reserve to provide additional bowling options should the team need cover at short notice. Dodemaide explained that keeping Hazlewood at home during the early part of the event was deemed more practical and beneficial for his long‑term fitness.

Meanwhile, teammates Nathan Ellis, Tim David and Glenn Maxwell have already reached Colombo and are expected to link up with the Australian side ahead of warm‑up fixtures and the main tournament.

Hazlewood’s injury problems follow a hamstring strain and subsequent Achilles setback that also ruled him out of Australia’s Ashes series. His availability for later stages of the World Cup remains uncertain, as selectors manage his return to play carefully.

This development adds to Australia’s fitness concerns after Pat Cummins was ruled out of the tournament altogether due to a persistent back issue, prompting further squad adjustments.
