Kagiso Rabada Cleared for IPL Return After Drug Suspension

South African fast bowler Kagiso Rabada is set to rejoin the Gujarat Titans for their Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 match against Mumbai Indians at Wankhede Stadium, following a one-month suspension for testing positive for a recreational drug. The 29-year-old’s return was confirmed by the South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS), which stated that Rabada had completed a substance abuse treatment program, making him eligible to resume competitive cricket.

Rabada’s absence from the IPL began in early April when he returned to South Africa after playing just two matches for the Titans, initially cited as being for “personal reasons.” Last week, Rabada clarified that he had tested positive for a recreational drug during the SA20 tournament in January, while representing MI Cape Town. In a public statement, he expressed regret for his actions and apologized to fans, teammates, and stakeholders.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Gujarat Titans’ Director of Cricket, Vikram Solanki, addressed Rabada’s situation, emphasizing that all protocols were followed during the suspension process. “Kagiso is now available for selection,” Solanki told reporters, as reported by Hindustan Times. “He has expressed regret for an error in judgment and issued a compelling statement. We’re eager to have him back in training and contributing to the team.”

Solanki praised Rabada’s transparency and commitment to moving forward, noting that the fast bowler is keen to return to the sport he loves. The Titans, currently fourth in the IPL 2025 points table, stand to benefit from Rabada’s return as they approach a critical phase of the tournament. Rabada, acquired for INR 10.75 crore at the IPL 2025 auction in Saudi Arabia in November 2024, had taken two wickets in his two appearances this season.

The SAIDS statement clarified that Rabada’s positive test occurred on January 21, following a match between MI Cape Town and Durban Super Giants. He was informed of the result on April 1, prompting his departure from the IPL. The completion of the treatment program aligns with World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) guidelines, which allow for a reduced one-month suspension for recreational drug use if the athlete proves the substance was taken out of competition and completes rehabilitation.

Rabada’s availability is a boost for the Titans, who are preparing to face a formidable Mumbai Indians batting lineup, bolstered by Rohit Sharma’s recent return to form. The match marks a significant moment for Rabada, who aims to put the suspension behind him and focus on his performance on the field.
