Dhoni Focuses on Building CSK’s Future Lineup Despite Playoff Challenges

Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni emphasized the need to establish a stable team for the 2026 IPL season, even as the team grapples with a tough campaign. Following a nine-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians on Sunday, Dhoni urged his players to reflect on their performances and focus on forming a consistent lineup for the future.

Dhoni acknowledged that some players are underperforming but expressed confidence in nearing a solid core for next year. “We need to evaluate if we’re playing the right brand of cricket,” he said, stressing a game-by-game approach. “The goal is to qualify, but if that doesn’t happen, we must secure a strong eleven for next season.”

With CSK at the bottom of the standings, having lost six of eight matches, reaching the playoffs seems unlikely. Dhoni underscored the importance of maintaining composure and playing quality cricket, noting that emotional reactions won’t help. He was candid about the team’s batting struggles, pointing out their failure to capitalize on favorable conditions.

“We knew dew would play a role in the second half, yet we didn’t make the most of the middle overs,” Dhoni said, critiquing the batters’ lack of tactical awareness. He suggested starting the aggressive phase earlier, especially against a bowler like Jasprit Bumrah, widely regarded as one of the best death bowlers. “If we had scored more in certain overs, we could’ve reached a competitive total. With dew, 175 isn’t enough,” he added.

Looking ahead, CSK’s 2026 batting core is expected to feature young talents like 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, 20-year-old Shaikh Rasheed, 21-year-old Dewald Brevis, and 22-year-old Vansh Bedi, alongside 25-year-old Rachin Ravindra, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, and power-hitter Shivam Dube. This shift signals a departure from the veteran-heavy squads of past seasons.

Dhoni reserved special praise for Mhatre, whose aggressive batting stood out. “He played his shots with confidence, which is exactly the approach we need,” Dhoni said. “If he continues performing at the top, it’ll ease the pressure on our middle and lower order.” The captain sees Mhatre’s emergence as a positive sign for CSK’s future.
