Bengaluru Stampede: CM Siddaramaiah Mourns Loss, Rejects Comparisons to Kumbh Mela

Bengaluru, June 5, 2025 – Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah expressed profound grief over a deadly stampede near Chinnaswamy Stadium on Wednesday, which claimed 11 lives and injured 33 people during celebrations for Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) IPL victory. Speaking to reporters, he described the incident as a tragic event that should not have occurred and announced a magisterial inquiry to investigate the circumstances.

Siddaramaiah emphasized that he would not deflect responsibility by comparing the Bengaluru tragedy to other incidents, such as the Maha Kumbh Mela stampede, where he noted 50-60 people lost their lives. “I did not criticize when several people died at Kumbh Mela,” he said, distancing himself from any political blame game. He clarified that while the Congress party might voice criticism, neither he nor the Karnataka government had commented on the Kumbh Mela incident.

The chief minister expressed deep sorrow, stating, “This tragedy has overshadowed the joy of RCB’s victory.” He has ordered a thorough investigation to be conducted by a magisterial authority to determine the cause of the stampede and prevent future occurrences. The government has also pledged support for the victims, ensuring medical care for the injured and announcing financial assistance for the families of those who perished.

The stampede occurred as large crowds gathered to celebrate RCB’s triumph, overwhelming the area near the stadium. Siddaramaiah’s remarks came amid criticism from opposition parties, who accused the state government of mismanagement. He reiterated his commitment to a transparent inquiry, stating that the findings would guide future safety measures.
