New Delhi: The West Indies put up a resolute show with the bat to extend the Delhi Test to a fifth day, leaving India needing 58 more runs for victory. Centuries from John Campbell and Shai Hope, followed by a determined lower-order stand between Justin Greaves and Jayden Seales, tested India’s bowlers for long spells. West Indies were eventually bowled out for 390 in their second innings, setting India a target of 121. By stumps, India reached 63 for 1.
India’s hopes for quick wickets on the fourth morning were thwarted by Campbell and Hope, as both batters negotiated Jasprit Bumrah’s probing spell with calm assurance. Campbell, after surviving a close LBW call, reached his maiden Test century with a six off Ravindra Jadeja, before being trapped LBW soon after for 113. Hope then anchored the innings and went on to score his first century in 58 innings. His dismissal to Mohammed Siraj broke a vital stand just as India grabbed the new ball.
Kuldeep Yadav, coming off a five-wicket haul in the first innings, again made crucial breakthroughs by dismissing Tevin Imlach and Roston Chase. Bumrah added to the tally with two quick strikes, including a sharp inducker that bowled Jomel Warrican. But the final-wicket partnership between Greaves (50) and Seales (32) frustrated India with a gritty 79-run stand across 22 overs before Seales holed out to Washington Sundar.
India’s openers made a brisk start in pursuit of a modest total, but Yashasvi Jaiswal’s attempt to clear long-on led to his dismissal. KL Rahul and Sai Sudharsan steadied the innings and will resume on the final day. India declared their first innings on 518/5, while the West Indies posted 248 and 390 in their two innings.
Brief Scores: India 518/5 decl. (Yashasvi Jaiswal 175, Shubman Gill 129*, Sai Sudharsan 87; Jomel Warrican 3-98) & 63/1 trail West Indies 248 (Alick Athanaze 41, Shai Hope 36) and 390 (John Campbell 113, Shai Hope 103, Justin Greaves 50; Jasprit Bumrah 3-44, Kuldeep Yadav 3-104) by 58 runs.
