Maxwell Calls Time on ODI Career, Eyes T20 Future with Australia

Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has retired from One Day International (ODI) cricket with immediate effect, concluding a remarkable 13-year tenure in the 50-over format, as announced on the Final Word Podcast. The 36-year-old all-rounder, renowned for his explosive batting and versatile off-spin bowling, will continue to represent Australia in T20 Internationals, with his sights set on the 2026 T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
Maxwell’s decision follows a challenging performance at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, where he felt his physical condition hindered his contribution to the team. “I felt like I was letting the team down a little bit with how my body was reacting to the conditions,” he told the Final Word Podcast. After discussions with Cricket Australia’s chairman of selectors, George Bailey, Maxwell chose to step away from ODIs. His retirement aligns with those of teammates Steve Smith and Marcus Stoinis, who also exited the ODI format around the same time.
In a distinguished ODI career, Maxwell played 149 matches, amassing 3,990 runs and claiming 77 wickets. His most iconic performance came during the 2023 Cricket World Cup against Afghanistan, where he battled severe cramps to score an unbeaten 201 off 128 balls, steering Australia from a precarious 91/7 to chase down 293 and secure a historic victory. This innings is widely regarded as one of the greatest in ODI history.
Maxwell, a two-time ODI World Cup winner in 2015 and 2023, leaves the format as the player with the highest strike rate (126.70) among those with at least 2,000 runs. Despite his ODI exit, he remains committed to T20 cricket, including domestic leagues like the Big Bash League and other global T20 tournaments.
