Brook stood firm amid the collapse
Under Brook’s captaincy, England got off to a disastrous start after opting to bat first. When Brook came to the crease, the team’s score was 3 wickets for 5 runs. Soon it became 4 for 10, 5 for 33, and 6 for 56. Yet, Brook remained unshaken.
Thanks to his brilliant 135, England reached a respectable 223 all out in 35.2 overs. Apart from Brook, only Jamie Overton (46 runs) offered resistance. The pair shared a vital 87-run partnership.
9 of 10 wickets fell to pace bowlers
Two English batters were dismissed for ducks, and apart from Brook and Overton, every other player fell for single-digit scores.
For New Zealand, pacer Zachary Fox took 4 wickets, Jacob Duffy 3 wickets, and Matt Henry 2 wickets, while spinner Mitchell Santner claimed 1 wicket.

Harry Brook’s Record Book
- Highest share of England’s total:
Brook’s 135 out of 223 runs (60.53%) is a new England record, breaking Robin Smith’s 32-year-old mark. In 1993, Smith scored an unbeaten 167 against Australia at Birmingham, contributing 60.28% of England’s 277/5 total. - Century after early collapse:
Brook is now among the top three batters in world cricket to score a century when their team total was under 10 runs at one stage — and he holds the highest score (135) in such cases.

In 2006, Yuvraj Singh (India) scored 103 against South Africa after being 3 for 5.
