Coco Gauff Seizes French Open Glory with Gritty Comeback Win Over Sabalenka

American tennis star Coco Gauff captured her first French Open title on Saturday, overcoming world number one Aryna Sabalenka in a dramatic three-set final. The 21-year-old battled back after dropping the first set to secure a hard-fought 6-7 (5/7), 6-2, 6-4 victory on Court Philippe Chatrier.
This triumph marks Gauff’s second Grand Slam championship, adding the Roland Garros trophy to her 2023 US Open title. Notably, she defeated Sabalenka in both major finals. The win served as redemption for Gauff’s emotional loss to Iga Swiatek in the 2022 French Open final.
Facing challenging windy conditions, the second-ranked Gauff displayed rock-solid consistency after the initial setback. Sabalenka, the Belarusian top seed aiming to become the sole active woman holding three different Grand Slam titles (after her US Open 2023 win and consecutive Australian Open crowns in 2023 and 2024), struggled with unforced errors, committing 70 during the two-hour, 38-minute match. The contest echoed the pattern of their US Open final two years prior.
For Sabalenka, this defeat represents her second consecutive Grand Slam final loss, following her defeat by Madison Keys at the Australian Open in January. With this victory, Gauff now leads their head-to-head series 6-5. This final was also the first clash between the world’s top two women since Caroline Wozniacki beat Simona Halep at the 2018 Australian Open.
