BCCI Introduces Three Groundbreaking Rules for IPL 2025

As the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) approaches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced three significant rule changes. As 10 franchises are all set to square off in the battle for the IPL trophy, the new adjustments would need to be made regarding certain aspects of the game. These updates come just before the season opener between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
Saliva Ban Lifted:
After a ban due to the COVID-19 pandemic, bowlers are now allowed to use saliva to shine the ball. This decision came after a majority consensus from IPL captains, and it could potentially influence global cricket regulations.
Conditional Second New Ball:
A fresh ball will be introduced for the second innings in evening matches, subject to specific conditions, providing teams with more opportunities to capitalize on the conditions.
DRS for Wides :
The Decision Review System has been expanded to include height wides and off-side wides, which results in ensuring a fairer adjudication of deliveries. The on-field umpire will still be responsible for calling leg-side wides, as this rule remains unchanged.
Additionally, the BCCI has decided to retain the Impact Player rule, which allows teams to field 12 players instead of the usual 11. Despite facing significant criticism last year, with many arguing that it limits the development of all-rounders, the board has chosen to keep the rule in place for the current season.
While still under discussion, there are rumors regarding changes in the player replacement rules for part of the season, aiming to provide more flexibility.
