Tanzid Hasan Becomes First Bangladeshi To Score A Century On Australian Soil

On Day 2 of the first Test in Darwin on Friday, Bangladesh took control of the match against Australia thanks to opener Tanzid Hasan’s first Test century and Najmul Hossain Shanto’s fluid fifty.

After extending their lead to 153 runs on the second day, Bangladesh was in total control at stumps on 351/6 in 110 overs. Hasan Mahmud, who claimed six wickets on Day 1, was not out on 13, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz was undefeated on 32.

With an outstanding knock of 101, the youthful Tanzid became the first Bangladeshi batsman to make a Test century in Australia and the second Bangladeshi batter to do so in Tests overall.

The 25-year-old Tanzid, who was playing in just his second Test, put out excellent effort to give Bangladesh the lead. Mushfiqur Rahim provided 36 while Captain Shanto scored a fluid 84. With the second new ball, Australia’s pacers recovered, taking out Litton Das, Mushfiqur Rahim, and Shanto (84). Bangladesh was reduced to 308/6 in the 86th over, leading by 110 runs, after losing three wickets for 11 runs in a span of 24 deliveries.

Before Mushfiqur Rahim led Bangladesh past the 300-run threshold in the following over, Shanto was caught at second slip off Josh Hazlewood for 84.

Smith caught Litton Das off Mitchell Starc for a 12-ball duck, resulting in his wicket in a same manner.

But shortly after reaching his century, Tanzid was caught at long-off off Nathan Lyon’s bowling for 101. In the morning session, his 93-run third-wicket partnership with Shanto was crucial in keeping Australia at bay.

The only wicket lost during the morning session was Mominul Haque, who was caught behind Josh Hazlewood for 49.

Tanzid and Haque batted skillfully to add 102 runs for the second wicket before the latter was removed in the morning session, which resumed at 96 for one.

Bangladesh pinned the top-ranked team in the world for less than 200 on Thursday, enjoying their first taste of Test cricket in Australia in 23 years.

On a historic day for Bangladesh’s fast bowling, Hasan Mahmud was the main performer, taking 6/55 at Marrara Oval to defeat Pat Cummins’s squad for 198, their lowest innings total in seven Test matches against the South Asian side.
