The World Cup-winning captain is in talks regarding losing his captaincy in the T20 cricket format. Suryakumar Yadav, a creative player with great adaptability, is slipping in his grip from the bat; as this edition of the IPL bears witness, there is a staggering degradation in his form with the bat. The BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) is actively looking to change the national team’s leading player, examining the current captain’s performance in recent years.
Yadav’s form has remained under par lately. Of the 35 T20 matches played, the skipper only managed to put 702 runs to his credit between January 2025 and March 2026. With an average around 26, the batter has struggled to maintain his game in these matches. His declining show has been observed after he was given the task of captaining the team. However, Yadav as a captain has never been doubted; with the historic 2026 T20 World Cup victory and 2023 Asia Cup lift, he is proven to have one of the strategic minds in cricket.

Yadav’s batting reign shone until October 2024, with a half-century against Bangladesh on 12th October 2024, prior to directly scoring runs above fifty in January 2026 against New Zealand. The drought ended with consecutive half-centuries for Suryakumar against New Zealand. Gaining the confidence of the board, Suryakumar was chosen to be the captain for the 2026 T20 World Cup and also saved India from a shameful defeat against the USA in the opener of the tournament, smashing a solid 84 not out to give a defendable score for the bowlers.
In the ultimate decision, if Suryakumar finds himself removed from the T20 captaincy ahead, opinions shouldn’t be changed regarding how he had an impact in this format of the game for the nation.
