Following their withdrawal from their County Championship matches at the England & Wales Cricket Board’s (ECB) request, Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson have taken a step closer to returning to England.
Atkinson, who was playing for Surrey against Glamorgan, and Stokes, who was playing for Durham against Northamptonshire, participated in the first two days of the most recent county round before being cut before day three. On Thursday, the third Test match against New Zealand gets underway at Trent Bridge.
After England’s victory at Lord’s in the series opener, the ECB looked into a team curfew violation, which prevented the pair from being selected for the second Test at The Oval. The result of the investigation has not yet been made public by the ECB. One can hope that the ECB finds them both not guilty, as England definitely missed the duo after being hammered by New Zealand by 253 runs.
England next plays New Zealand for the third test on 25th June in Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
