Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill has been handed a fine of INR 12 lakh for his side’s slow over-rate during Match No. 14 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 against Delhi Capitals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on Wednesday, April 8.
The IPL confirmed the penalty in an official release, noting that since this was Gujarat’s first such offence this season, Gill was fined under Article 2.22 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct, which governs minimum over-rate requirements.
The fine came on the heels of one of the more gripping contests of the season a nail-biting one-run victory for Gujarat that handed them their first win of IPL 2026.
Gill and Buttler Lay the Foundation
Put in to bat first, Gujarat lost the opening stand early with Gill and Sai Sudharsan managing just 19 together before Jos Buttler took centre stage, racing to a half-century. Gill held firm at the other end and took control once Buttler departed, eventually bringing up his own fifty.
His 104-run third-wicket partnership with Washington Sundar — who also reached fifty — proved decisive, catapulting Gujarat to a formidable 210 for four in 20 overs. Gill finished as the side’s top scorer with a hard-hitting 70 off 45 balls, laced with five sixes and four fours.
Miller’s Fireworks Not Enough for Delhi
Delhi’s response was electric, with KL Rahul blazing 92 off 52 balls to keep the home side firmly in the hunt. But it was David Miller who threatened to steal the show, launching a ferocious assault on the Gujarat bowlers including a colossal 106-metre six off Prasidh Krishna in the final over.
With two needed off the last two balls and three wickets in hand, the match was Delhi’s to lose and they did. Miller first declined a single on the penultimate delivery and then failed to make contact on the last ball, directly triggering Kuldeep Yadav’s run out. Delhi fell short by a single run, handing Gujarat a dramatic victory.
