Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar believes young batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi may have to wait for his opportunity in the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand. Nayar has backed wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson, saying his ability to bounce back with a big innings makes team selection difficult.
Speaking on a platform, Nayar explained that Samson often faces questions about his place in the team after a few low scores. However, he can quickly change the discussion by playing a strong innings.
Nayar pointed out that Samson’s unpredictable performances make it difficult for the team management to make a final decision about his place in the playing XI. He believes the experienced batter can still make a difference when given the opportunity.
Why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi May Have to Wait
Nayar also stressed that India’s team combination will play an important role in deciding whether Sooryavanshi gets a place in the playing XI. The team may prefer a mix of left-handed and right-handed batters to make it harder for opposition bowlers to settle into a rhythm. Sooryavanshi, who has attracted attention for his aggressive batting at a young age, is seen as a promising option for India’s T20I side. His talent has led to discussions about when he will get another opportunity at the international level.

According to Nayar, the team should avoid making sudden changes based on a few performances. He said that selection decisions affect not only individual players but also the team’s overall culture. Young players need to be given opportunities at the right time, while established players should also receive a fair chance to prove themselves.
Nayar suggested that Sooryavanshi could get an opportunity in a series where Samson is unavailable or rested. For now, the team’s batting balance could influence the decision.
India’s Selection Dilemma Ahead of New Zealand T20Is
The debate highlights the challenge facing the Indian team management: balancing the experience of established players with the promise of young talent. Samson’s ability to produce a big innings after a difficult run keeps him in the conversation, while Sooryavanshi’s potential makes him a player fans are eager to see. As India prepares for the New Zealand T20I series, the final selection will depend on the team’s requirements, player form and the combination the management believes will work best.
Nayar’s view is clear: Sooryavanshi has a future with the team, but patience will be important as he waits for the right opportunity.
