Oman vs Australia: Zampa Opens Up On Australia’s T20 World Cup Flop

Leg-Spinner Reflects on Team's Shortcomings After Early Tournament Exit

In a forthright reflection following Australia’s commanding nine-wicket victory against Oman, leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who claimed the Player of the Match honors with figures of 4/27, acknowledged the team’s deep disappointment over their premature departure from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Speaking after the match, Zampa told reporters, “To be honest, it has been a rough few days for us.” He added, “The voice in our changeroom has been pretty quiet as we are very disappointed that our World Cup is ending so soon.”

Captain Mitchell Marsh delivered a scintillating half-century to close out the group stage on a positive note, showcasing Australia’s dominance in a lopsided encounter. Zampa spearheaded the bowling attack, dismantling Oman’s middle order and halting their progress, while contributions from Glenn Maxwell, Xavier Bartlett, Marcus Stoinis, and Nathan Ellis sealed the opposition’s fate.

Electing to bowl first, Australia restricted Oman to 104 in 16.2 overs. Despite his standout performance, Zampa was self-critical about his earlier efforts in the tournament. “I think that I could’ve done more in that Sri Lanka game. My contribution in that game was not good at all. I think that I could’ve done better in that game. My job is to get wickets through the middle,” he stated.

Australia then overhauled the 105-run target in a mere 9.4 overs, powered by Marsh’s explosive 64 off 33 deliveries and Travis Head’s 32 off 19 in a 93-run opening partnership. However, personal achievements provided scant comfort for Zampa. “You would always like to have wickets rather than not having. I am not thinking about that much. I am disappointed that our tournament ended today,” he said.

“We have built this squad in the last few years, but we failed to do our jobs right,” Zampa concluded.
