“Bazball Dies Where It All Begins”: NZ Clinch Series By 2-1

On the last morning at Trent Bridge, New Zealand bowled England out for 212 with a clinical performance, winning the series 2-1 and scoring a commanding 160-run victory.

Under cloudy conditions, England’s ambitions of pursuing a formidable target swiftly vanished on a day largely overshadowed by Ben Stokes’ abrupt announcement of his retirement from international competition. The visitors mercilessly chipped away at the remaining wickets to ruin the captain’s farewell and achieve a historic series victory on British soil, despite a vigorous, lower-order revival spearheaded by Jamie Smith’s tenacious half-century.

In the series finale, England required an additional 270 runs after starting with their overnight score of 103/4. However, the batting order collapsed around a single significant stand with half-centurion Jamie.

In the first two overs of the cloudy morning, Joe Root each hit a boundary, but a double blow in the third over of the day decisively tipped the scales in favor of New Zealand. Tom Blundell made a quick low catch behind the stumps to send Emilio Gay back for just 10, and Nathan Smith struck first. The hosts were in serious trouble at 116/6 after Root was run out for 18 later in that same over thanks to a brilliant stroke of fielding by Henry Nicholls.

Gus Atkinson then joined Jamie, and he played the ideal supporting role as the two put together a vital 75-run partnership to keep New Zealand at bay for more than an hour during the morning session. Jamie persisted in setting boundaries and punishing bad balls, especially when he faced Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith. But in the minutes before lunch, Santner snagged Atkinson plumb in front of the stumps for 19, ending his patient 70-ball vigil. After the break, New Zealand only needed three more wickets to win. Nathan continued to erode the English lower order, quickly eliminating Josh Tongue and Jofra Archer. Jamie Smith though was determined to reduce the deficit, taking on Santner for multiple boundaries enroute his half century.

In the end, the left-arm spinner came out on top. Santner ended the match by dismissing Jamie for a valiant 60 after being a little costly on Day 5 against Jamie’s counterattack. Jamie was the last wicket to go, dismissing England for 212 and giving the visitors a huge victory.

Daryl Mitchell was awarded the MOTM for his gritty century, battling through pain and deadly deliveries. Jofra Archer and Nathan Smith were jointly awarded the player of the series.

Brief Scores: New Zealand 438 & 288/9 decl. beat England 354 & 212 (Jamie Smith 60; Zakary Foulkes 3-52, Mitchell Santner 2-54, Nathan Smith 2-64) by 160 runs.
